The Independent Business News Network was established in July of 2008. The goal of IBNN is to provide a different view of the local, national and global news and events that happen in the Black communities around the world. IBNN's expectations are to provide a level of coverage and investigative reporting not seen on local mainstream media, while covering Politics, Education, Money, Business, and Community events. IBNN is an affiliate of Black Politics in Minneapolis, Radical Black USA and other African American news sources. Comments, concerns and questions can be emailed to ibnnnews@gmail.com

Do Black Minnesotans have to have the “worse” in every category? Minneapolis’ STD disparities on the rise for Blacks – but nobody’s reporting that!

This post has already been read 8096 times!

The Minnesota Department of Health has reported that Gonorrhea and other STD’s are on the rise in Minneapolis. The harshest reality is the Black-White gap. Black Minnesotans are in some cases over 20-times more likely to catch an STD then White Minnesotans. I think there’s room for some education. Oh, wait – they gave that grant out already…WTF happened?

Minneapolis, MN (IBNN NEWS/Health & STD’s/August 16, 2012)…The Star Tribune isn’t going to tell it. Some of the local television stations will wait until minorities are dying by the hundreds before it gets any news coverage. The unwavering fact is, the Minnesota Department of Health has granted dollars to many local organizations to address the growing STD increase in communities of color – it seems like someone doesn’t know what the hell their doing.

1. Chlamydia is the most commonly reported communicable disease in Minnesota. From an all-time low of 115 cases per 100,000 in 1996, the incidence of chlamydia has more than doubled to 319 per 100,000 in 2011. Over these years, increases were seen across all gender, age, race and geographical groups. The rates more than tripled among men (54 to 193 per 100,000) and more than doubled among females (175 to 443 per 100,000). Among 30-39 year-olds, the incidence rate more than quadrupled. Rates doubled among American Indians, Blacks, and Hispanics and almost tripled among Whites and Asian/Pacific Islanders.

2. Gonorrhea…In 2011, Minnesota experienced an increase in the rate of reported gonorrhea, after rates declined from 2008-2010. From 2000 to 2011, the incidence of gonorrhea in Minnesota decreased from 65 to 43 per 100,000 persons (34%). However, as with chlamydia, the incidence of infection was higher among some segments of the population compared to others. Rates during the past decade have decreased by 24% among males and 17% among females. The rates also decreased among all racial/ethnic groups, with the largest drops among Blacks and Asians (46% and 57%, respectively). However, during this period Blacks continued to have gonorrhea incidence rates far higher than other race groups.

3. Syphilis…. In Minnesota, Blacks comprised compromised 17% of all primary/secondary syphilis cases in 2011 and have a rate of primary/secondary syphilis that is almost 4 times higher than that among Whites.

4. Racial disparities in STDs continue to persist in Minnesota with communities of color having the highest rates. STD rates continued to be highest in the City of Minneapolis. However, the Twin Cities suburbs and Greater Minnesota accounted for a large percentage of STD cases.

The challenge begins when we start to look at the funding stream to the Minneapolis Public Schools to local non-profit agencies who say they address the STD epidemic in Minneapolis. IBNN is here to tell you, “Having condoms at the front desk in a bowl isn’t doing shit to educate anyone about these possible life threatening STD’s.

More importantly, you would think the mainstream media would assist in making communities of color aware of this dreadful disparity.  Someone has to come to the rescue of these folks who have no vision; offer no creative ideas and sit around while the Black community is becoming extinct.
